The goal of the Doula is to provide the laboring person with comfort, some sense of control and absolute confidence. The Doula accomplishes this by providing comfort touch, creating a calm environment, applying warm/cold therapy, counter pressure, position changes and rebozo techniques.
Being armed with a wealth of information allows the laboring person and their partner to remain confident throughout the labor process. The Doula will provide information regarding different labor techniques, evidence based options and explaining medical procedures that may present themselves.
Providing emotional support to the laboring person helps them to feel cared for giving them a sense of pride and empowerment during labor and delivery. The Doula accomplishes this by continuous praise, encouragement, mindset coaching, reassuring and mirroring the laboring person.
Although a Doula will NEVER speak on behalf of a laboring person, a Doula does provide the space for the laboring person to voice their needs and concerns, amplifies their voice if they are being dismissed or unheard, facilities a strong relationship between the laboring person and their provider and always asks the laboring person what they want.

In 2017, Bohren et al. published an updated Cochrane review on the use of continuous support for women during childbirth. They combined the results of 26 trials that included more than 15,000 people. The birthing people in these studies were randomized to either receive continuous, one-on-one support during labor or “usual care.” The results of this study mean that if a birthing person has continuous labor support (that is, someone who never leaves their side), both mothers and babies are statistically more likely to have better outcomes!
